Once widely considered greater Washington’s best Ethiopian spot, Etete is still one of the premier stops in “Little Ethiopia.” Te vegetable platters show a great deal of care; the doro wat, a traditional stew of chicken leg in spiced butter sauce served with a hard-boiled egg, is one of the area’s best. Entrees $12-$16.

Tere are so many great items on the menu — a killer doro wat, delicate yet spicy kitfo, perfectly prepared lentils and tender stewed lamb — that praise for the restaurant’s injera might seem odd. But owner Meaza Zemedu got her start baking the spongy bread for other restaurants, and practice paid off. Order the premium injera, which uses authentic Ethiopian flour, made from the grain teff, and marvel at the way it transforms the meal. Entrees $11-$14.99.

Queen Makeda has a half-dozen tables and about a half-dozen dishes. Upstairs, a bar area provides a bit more space, along with happy hour specials, but the overwhelming feeling here is one of homey comfort. Traditional family favorites such as the beef stew tibs wat and doro wat are the most pleasing. Entrees $12-$13.90. — Justin Rude
