Clearwater Design IQALUIT A check of the tape reveals that Clearwater Design’s roto- moulded Iqaluit has all the characteristics of a good rec- reational kayak: the large cockpit is not intimidating for beginners and makes entry and exit a graceful affair; the 11’6” length is a fair compromise between straight-track- ing speed and manoeuvrability; and the 28-inch beam provides great stability.

Bic BILBAO As a 10-foot boat that paddles like it’s 12 or 14 feet, the Bil- bao is Bic’s best-selling sit-on-top kayak. It is large enough to hold an adult and a kid, and so stable you’ll really have to try to tip it over (take our word for it, or wait for a warm day). Convenient features include a transport wheel built into the transom for rolling home to the camper and a bumper on the bow to dampen head-on collisions. $669 Cdn •

Canon DC 22 Lightweight camcorders are nothing new, but in the past you’ve had to transfer your footage onto a DVD or tape to archive and view at home. Canon’s DC 22 lets you record your family’s most embarrassing moments on a mini- DVD that you can eject from the camera and pop directly into your rec-room system. The 2.2 megapixel CCD and advanced colour filtering will faithfully reproduce even intense blushes.

Sierra Designs BIG DOG Instead of a security blanket I carry around Doggie Dog and my sleeping bag. We go everywhere together, but we’ve never been camping in the early spring or late fall. The Sierra Designs Big Dog is what I need for stretching out in three seasons. The synthetic Polarguard HV is sup- posed to keep me warm down to –7 C. It has snag-free zipper tracks, chest and pillow pockets, a draft tube and a tricot-lined foot box. I can use the Big Dog until I’m five feet tall, and the coolest part is the lining looks like a trea- sure map.—Dougie
