GOING ONCE, GOING TWICE… A painting of a canoe fetched the largest price ever for a work by a living artist in February when White Canoe by Peter Doig fetched $11.3 million at a London auction. Te Saatchi Gallery had this to say: “A mir- rored image of a lake at night, White Ca- noe is a wishful infeasibility…. Te boat is aberrantly glowing. Te landscape has the all-consuming blackness of an oil slick, deafening and motionless; all other colours seem to slide across it in a rustic laser show.” Te frame was included.

LEVY WATCH Canoeists are winning some battles in the fight against registration fees in U.S. states. In New Hampshire, a proposed annual fee for canoes to supplement the Department of Fish and Wildlife’s budget was rejected by the legislature in March. Meanwhile, In Utah, owners of canoes will have to pay $10 a year after a re-working of the old law that had some canoeists paying as much as some cabin cruiser owners.

SPLIFF SKIFF Four men and a woman are in the joint in the Royal Cayman Islands after being busted using a motorized canoe to trans- port many tonnes of marijuana. Police pursued the canoe in a helicopter and wit- nessed the suspects dumping overboard large bales and containers weighing up to 500 kilograms. One Cayman resident said, “One-five gallon container washed up right on my beach. I don’t know what was in [it]. I only imagined it was ganja, you know.” Te interview was cut short so the resident could go get a bite to eat. —I.M.
