Start off with a tour of bustling Fisherman’s Wharf and North Beach, noted for its 1950s beat generation and traditional Italian cuisine. Then it’s all aboard a catamaran for a private luncheon cruise on San Francisco Bay, serving up a taste of Boudin Bakery’s famous sourdough bread along with amazing views of Alcatraz Island and the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. Back on land, sightseeing continues with a look at Victorian San Francisco to view the city’s many Victorian, Italianate and Queen Anne-style architectural treasures. Meals BL

4. FROM MUIR WOODS TO THE SONOMA VALLEY En route to Sonoma, cross the Golden Gate Bridge and venture deep into the redwood groves of Muir Woods National Monument with your local guide; look up... and up... at magnificent Coast Redwood trees averaging between 500 to 800 years old! Spend some free time among the stylish streets and shops of waterfront Sausalito for lunch on your own before continuing on into the vineyard-covered landscapes of the Napa and Sonoma Valleys, the heart of northern California’s wine country. Partake in a privately guided vineyard tour and tasting at one of the region’s noted wineries before arriving at your spa resort in the mission town of Sonoma for a three-night stay. Join the hotel’s sommelier for a wine education class before dinner at leisure at the resort. Meals BD
5. THE NAPA VALLEY WINE TRAIN AND SONOMA Return to the gracious bygone era of elegant rail travel on a trip aboard the Wine Train from the town of Napa through the heart of the Napa Valley wine country. Upon returning to the resort, you may wish to join your Tauck Director on a walk through Sonoma. Meals BL

Depart for the Benziger Family Winery in Glen Ellen, where a private vineyard tram tour, wine tastings and lunch in the cool (literally) “wine cave” offer a behind-the- scenes look at modern wine production. If you choose an optional early morning hot air balloon ride over Napa Valley (additional $285) with a champagne breakfast, you’ll rejoin the others for lunch at the winery. Tonight, a wine and cheese reception followed by dinner mark the end of a great week in wine country! Meals BLD
