Food and wine go hand-in-hand in northern California. San Francisco is known the world over for the variety and quality of its dining opportunities… it’s even said that some people visit the city just to eat their way through its diverse neighborhoods. Virtually every cuisine you can imagine is represented here and, due to the city’s cosmopolitan population, authentically prepared dishes make sampling ethnic specialties a particular treat – from to-die-for Italian in North Beach to dim sum in Chinatown. On the waterfront, the Ferry Terminal Building at the Embarcadero is “foodie central,” with a focus on fresh, organic produce, artisan cheeses and breads and freshly caught fish; naturally, tasting is encouraged! Some of the best wines in the world come from the nearby Sonoma and Napa valleys; you can actually smell the grapes in the air during harvest time (the end of August through November, depending upon the year), a particularly festive time to visit. Tasting one’s way through these wineries is a delight for aficionados... and a trip through Napa Valley vineyards aboard the Wine Train – where you’ll savor a gourmet lunch paired with local wines aboard a restored 1917 Pullman Dining Car – is an experience that lingers long on the palate...
