4. BORIES, ABBEYS & BOULES

A day in the Luberon is a visual feast with chalk cliffs, fairy-tale villages, meadows and moorlands. In a nearby village, pick out the ingredients for a traditional picnic lunch – perhaps a baguette, fruits and meats, cheese, olives and, naturellement, wine… tempt your palate! Walk to beautiful Abbaye de Sénanque; your path is a treat for the senses. Depending on the time of year, you can see lavender in full bloom or golden wheat fields surrounding the 900-year-old abbey, still home to Cistercian monks. Picnic in a Provençal meadow, then return to Joucas where the remainder of the day is at your leisure. There are trails to hike, bikes to ride, an exquisite spa to feed the soul and rejuvenate, plus manicured gardens that provide a perfect backdrop for a session with a good book. Join us for an informal lesson in the game of boules, a favorite Provençal tradition. Meals BL

5. KAYAKING & A PUB CRAWL

Paddle your kayak along the picturesque, mysterious Sorgue River... passing by waterwheels suspended in time! Back on land, travel to Arles, once a major Gallo-Roman city. Its ancient ruins date back to the 7th century BC, echoing vestiges of the past in its Roman Arena and Theatre. Stroll down boulevards lined with candy-colored shutters from 18th-century stone manors and into leafy squares… stop for lunch and people-watching in one of its many charming cafés. Arrive late afternoon in van Gogh country. St-Rémy-de-Provence inspires with small town life and your fantastic boutique hotel. Tonight discover the allure of pub crawling in Provence; not in the touristy places, but inside the pubs where the locals go. Meals B

6. WINING & DINING IN AVIGNON

Among the secrets of the flavorful French cuisine you’ll enjoy on this trip are the farm-fresh ingredients that chefs handpick to cook up their mouth-watering fare. Lucky for you, it’s market day in Avignon! Accompany our chef on a buying trip to a local market. Learn the tricks of the trade as you help the chef prepare a traditional meal in a hands-on cooking lesson. After a professional sommelier guides you through a tasting and pairing of fine Rhône wines for your meal, it’s time to savor the experience at a leisurely midday lunch. During the 14th century, Roman Catholic popes ruled from Avignon. Explore the sights on your own or join us on a guided tour inside the Palais des Papes, before returning to St. Rémy. Meals BL

7. LES BAUX & VAN GOGH

Learn about the life and works of Vincent van Gogh during a visit to Saint-Paul-de- Mausole, and get a glimpse of what went on inside his tormented mind from van Gogh scholar Mathilde Duvilliers. An afternoon excursion to Les Baux entices with sweeping views over the Vallon de la Fontaine, a well-preserved medieval village and evocative ruins. You’ll get a different taste of Provence when you visit an olive oil mill for a tasting of homemade products; groves of olive trees among the vineyards are probably a familiar sight by now! Tonight, the mood is joyous at our farewell dinner. Meals BD
