Integrated approach
Critical to the success of Newmont Ghana has been its integrated approach and its work in partnership with other agencies. Through its partnership with the Ghana Health Service, 100 peer health educators were trained to provide prevention and treatment information to more than 10,000 people each year. This has effectively widened the net for voluntary counseling and testing on HIV/AIDS, helping to break down stigma about the disease. Through the same partnership, Newmont Ghana has also increased prevention of malaria by distributing treated bed-nets in local communities and the workplace. With financial support from the International Finance Corporation, Newmont Ghana has delivered HIV/AIDS education to employees of the small- and medium-size enterprises with which it works. In one instance, after a full day’s training for suppliers and vendors, nine out of the ten participating companies committed to establishing their own workplace HIV/AIDS programs. Newmont Ghana also joined forces with another major mining company in Ghana, AngloGold Ashanti, to share best practice with each other and with small
Ghanaian businesses. This knowledge-sharing partnership has enabled both companies to develop smarter programs built on each other’s lessons learned.
Contributions from key partners International SOS has been working closely with Newmont Ghana on its HIV/AIDS and malaria programs, both delivering the programs and as an advisor to the company. Dr Myles Neri is Group Medical Director at International SOS. “We’re privileged to be associated with Newmont Ghana’s award-winning programs”, he says. “The GBC award is an accolade to our team who has not only helped Newmont in designing and operating the programs but has also been very successful collecting the data needed to report the results and return on investment.” In May 2009, Newmont Ghana recognized the key
contribution of International SOS by commending the work done by Godwin Fuseni, International SOS’ Project Manager, and his team in supporting Newmont Ghana in reducing the incidence of malaria in its workforce. Godwin, a qualified entomologist,
these programs has been broad and profound ”
has led the malaria control program at the Ahafo gold mine since it started. He was commended by Newmont for his leadership and skills in training the malaria control team, managing field operations, and performing a critical analysis of monitoring data. Francesca Viliani is International SOS’ Director of
Public Health Services. “Accurate project design is essential to achieve sustained reduction of malaria transmission”, she explains. “If disease is going to be controlled in a sustainable way, the problems need to be thoroughly understood, recommendations need to be effectively designed and monitored, and all stakeholders need to be involved from the early stage. The collection of good-quality data is a key pillar of all these activities and Newmont Ghana has been very supportive of our approach ever since the start of the program.” “Collaboration with key program partners like
International SOS and the Ghana Health Service underpin the success of the overall program” adds Nick Cotts. “The HIV/AIDS and malaria control programs are key foundations of Newmont Ghana’s commitment to social responsibility and our desire to demonstrate industry-leading performance using a partnership approach to truly deliver value to our host communities.” ■
