Mining company Newmont Ghana Gold Limited has won a prestigious award for its work fighting malaria and HIV/AIDS.


Winning the battle


nly by joining together the corporate sector, governments and civil society in a common cause will the fight be won against the world’s most devastating diseases. That’s the philosophy of the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GBC), a unique worldwide coalition of 200 corporate organizations. Each year the GBC honors selected pioneers in the fight against disease through its prestigious Business Excellence Awards. This June, the GBC voted Newmont Ghana as winner of its Workplace Category for its HIV/AIDS and malaria prevention programs. The GBC described the Newmont Ghana’s

Global commitments


Newmont Ghana Gold Limited is a subsidiary of Newmont Mining Corporation, the second largest gold producing company in the world. Most of Newmont Ghana’s 5,000 employees and contractors work at its Ahafo mine in mid-western Ghana which produced its millionth ounce of gold in 2008, two years after production began. Over in Eastern Ghana, Newmont’s Akyem project is currently in the planning phase.

‘Broad and profound’ Newmont Ghana’s workplace HIV/AIDS and malaria programs began in 2005 and 2006 respectively with the aim of helping workers and the wider community to protect themselves from HIV/AIDS and malaria, and to mitigate the impact of these diseases. In recognizing Newmont Ghana’s achievements, the GBC said that the impact of these programs has been ‘broad and profound’. For example, the reduction in the monthly incidence rate for malaria among Newmont Ghana’s employees, which was 8% in 2006 and dropped to just 1.8% by 2009. As President of the GBC, John Tedstrom, pointed out, “Newmont doesn’t just reach its workers. It also covers families, contractors and suppliers – a demonstration of the company’s commitment to being a force for good beyond the factory gates. Its impact is substantial on both HIV and malaria. Our fight against global diseases is far from over. We need more companies to follow Newmont’s tremendous example”.
