NEWS Yaktrax Allows You To Walk On Snow And Ice With Confidence

Everyone remembers last winter as the one that brought large areas of

the country to a standstill for weeks on end and kept large sections of the population housebound for fear of injury from the treacherous conditions underfoot. But now, with the introduction of Yaktrax, walking on packed snow and ice will give you the same solid, predictable grip you are accustomed to feeling on dry surfaces. Yaktrax is a unique, patented, compact,

lightweight traction device that simply fits neatly over whatever shoes you want to wear and is held in place by an injection moulded thermal plastic elastomer. The scientifically engineered coil design is protected against rusting and will give you 360 degrees of traction as the hundreds of biting edges come into contact with the ice and packed snow beneath your feet. Named after the sure-footed Tibetan yak, Yaktrax have proved their

worth in numerous trials and studies. They are suitable for everyone who may have to walk on packed snow or ice – and that takes in virtually everyone who has to leave the safety and warmth of their own home! This last winter Accident and Emergency departments of hospitals throughout the UK reported a large increase in the numbers of patients

they had to treat for injuries, some very serious, caused by falling on ice and snow. Even now we are hearing from the 174 councils in England & Wales responsible for gritting the streets that 15% of them don’t have the required amount of rock salt that was ordered for this coming winter. Wearing Yaktrax could reduce numbers of falls substantially as tests and

surveys carried out by the National Health & Wellness Club, the Handyman Club of America and the American Geriatrics Society have confirmed. ‘Yaktrax is the market leader by far in North America and it’s easy to see

why.” says Hamish Ogilvie from Granger’s, the UK distributor. ‘They couldn’t be easier to use and coming off the back of last winter we have seen incredible demand from retailers for this product. Yaktrax allow you to feel safe and secure in icy conditions and have been proven to help reduce falls. This makes them ideal for all ages and anyone who doesn’t feel 100% confident in snowy conditions.’ The Yaktrax Walker retails at £15 and the Yaktrax Pro, with an extra strap across the instep, at £20 and they are available in four different sizes from most good outdoor retailers in the UK.

Nicole Robinson, Student of the Year 2010 of Papillon, Belgravia, London. Our President Bernard O'Brien of

Luke O'Brien Shoes To Be Shoer of Tuam, S. Ireland was delighted as part of his official duties, to award the Fisher George Memorial Trophy for Student of the Year to Nicole Robinson of Papillon, London and John Nasillo, Area Manager delighted Nicole by presenting her with a personally inscribed Valet Box courtesy of Dasco Dunkelman. "Nicole was an outstanding

student, worked hard on her coursework and attended Workshops" said Laura West Secretary. "She will make a great ambassador for the Society". It was obvious why - Nicole wanted to learn as much as she could to make her own business an even greater success. Nicole was appalled to learn there is currently no legal obligation to know anything about

feet or footwear to sell shoes, particularly to children, but feels there should be more than a moral obligation. Nicole and two partners design all the shoes themselves under their Papillon label and have two shops in London, one in Belgravia and one in Marylebone. Nicole says: "There are three

partners at Papillon and we have in common children and a love of beautiful shoes. We really have come from a standing start in terms of shoe knowledge, each of us previously had a different career and so The Society of Shoe fitters has been an invaluable help to us on many levels. As we design for and sell only to

children it is imperative that we are all fully trained in the art of fitting shoes and foot health in general.

The course has been interesting and informative and it has really made me feel knowledgeable and more importantly confident about the foot and shoe fitting. Also we gleaned many tips as to how to deal with all the everyday occurrences that crop up whilst running a busy shoe shop. All the tutors are really experienced and were minds of useful information. The course allows you to manage it around a busy work schedule, a paper a month is feasible and the site visits and workshops so useful. They brought the things we studied to life - from watching the shoes being made in a factory to measuring and fitting people’s feet! I am very pleased and honoured

to have been made Student of the Year and am very glad I have done the course".

With profound sorrow we have to announce the recent

passing of Sandra Phillipson, co-director of Londonedge - who passed away 4th September 2010. San was loved by everyone and will never be forgotten

by anyone who knew her. She touched countless peoples lives and always for the better. The world is a far better place as a result of her 59 years. Second only to her family, one of San’s many passions

were her businesses. From the late 70’s, hand in hand with her husband Geoff, she was fundamental in driving and inspiring Alchemy to the international success it

enjoys today. Likewise in 2000 San & Carole Hunter combined their complimentary skills to launch Londonedge to an enthusiastic audience and it has gone from strength to strength since. Whilst never full time with Londonedge, San relished her every involvement in the show. She was immensely proud of Londonedge and the essential contribution it makes to its’ buyer and exhibitor companies.
