FROM THE EDITOR Walk Tall

F

rom burning calories to relieving back and joint pain, soothing aching feet and tightening your bottom muscles, “toning” shoes promise to improve your health. The idea behind MBTs (Masai Barefoot Technology) is that they reproduce the effect

of walking in bare feet on soft, uneven terrain - just like the Masai Tribe who inspired them. MBTs are designed with a curved sole that creates a rolling walking action. With every step, muscles have to work harder to counteract the instability created by the sole, and you naturally walk more upright. But, do they live up to the manufacturer’s claims? In this edition,

our intrepid reporter, Henry Harington (the Indiana Jones of Footwear!), road tests MBT’s latest Chelsea boot, designed to tighten the male tush and bring relief from lower back, knee and foot pains… When he’d stopped wobbling, Henry noticed an immediate change in his posture, he was walking tall - and he liked the effect! Read more on page 22. Interestingly, Karl Müller, the Swiss mechanical engineer who

started Masai Barefoot Technology in 1996 and sold it 10 years later to an American investment fund, has launched a new toning footwear concept. The 58-year-old executive and his 25-year-old son, who has the same name as his father, are already making strides with their three new product lines – Joya, Joyssy and Kyboot. Footwear Today reporters will shortly be road testing Joya, and

will report back to you in the New Year. Meanwhile, check out MBT’s fabulous new toning boot Tenga,

featured in this month’s Editor’s Choice page 14. The premium boot in its women’s dress collection, it is the perfect mix of function and fashion that refuses to look out of place on the high street or in the nightclub. You’ll also find a great selection of 100% Sheepskin boots, from Emu, Babes in Sheep’s Clothing and Eastern Counties Leather, as well as stylish and comfortable boots from Nero Giardini and Padders. In this edition we also look at slippers for all your customers from

the seasoned slipper wearer through to the person who needs an indoor shoe but doesn’t want it to look like one. And, don’t miss Fashion Trends - our exciting new section produced in association with leading fashion trend analysis company Trendstop.com. This month we bring you a taste of Autumn/Winter 2011/12, including, ‘Quirky Heritage’ for men and women.. Finally, check out our review on the highly successful Kensington

Shoe Event held which closed its doors on September 28. The KSE never fails to impress, with its fabulous ranges and comfortable hotel setting, situated in the heart of prime central London. Due to the refurbishment taking place at The Kensington Close Hotel, this season the Event was held at The Westbury Mayfair, Conduit Street, a prestigious West End venue that proved hugely popular with exhibitors and visitors alike. The comments from the exhibitors speak for themselves, on page 20.
