9.  SAVOR THE DAY AT SIRACUSA, SICILY Le Ponant docks at Ortigia off Siracusa today. Once the most important and powerful Greek city, Siracusa fell to the Romans in 211 BC. Take a walking tour of Ortigia; visit the Neapolis Parco Archeologico and Teatro Greco, where the great Greek playwrights staged their works; explore Latomia del Paradiso. After spending some free time on Ortigia, perhaps taking the opportunity to see the sixth-century Temple of Apollo and the Duomo, a unique example of Sicilian Baroque architecture, return to Le Ponant for dinner at sea. 10. DISEMBARK LE PONANT / MALTA Disembark Le Ponant in Valletta, the lovely Maltese capital that was founded in the 16th century by the Knights of St. John. Take a guided tour of Malta that includes the medieval walled city of Mdina and a drive around St. Julian’s Bay. Return to Valletta for a walking tour and a visit to the elaborate Co-Cathedral of St. John.
