News An action packed IBC

The broadcast industry appears to be making a steady recovery if visitor numbers to IBC 2010 are anything to go by. Close to 50,000 went through the doors of the RAI, a rise of almost 9% on last year. Sony had a prominent presence at the show and made significant waves with a plethora of new and upcoming products to complement its already extensive line of HD cameras and formats. First up is the PMW-500, a new XDCAM

model that mirrors the features and functionality of the popular PDW-700 but which records (at HD422 50mb/s) to SxS memory cards rather than the Professional Disc. Next Sony revealed a currently unnamed digital 35mm model, which is due out early next year and will be significantly more affordable than the F35 and the SRW-9000R. Finally came the unveiling of a dual-lens stereo 3d camera with a high quality, half-inch sensor. Currently a prototype, Sony aims to get a shipping product to market by the middle of next year. All these models and more are detailed on

this page. Elsewhere in this issue are the latest productions to have opted for Sony cameras over the last three or four months, which span a range of genres, from natural history to entertainment and factual programming. Staying with studio-based shows, The

Producer report this month covers multi-camera shoots and reveals how best to plan the camera set up and take care of the large amount of footage these productions generate. Jake Bickerton
