distribution, but shooting on the PDW-700 and PDW-F800 we could simply re-wrap low res proxies as Quicktime files, copy them to a memory stick and hand them out – saving a fortune.” Although Riley admits that she didn’t actively take the plunge to tapeless on the PMW-EX1 on ob doc series Night Cops (it was more a case of being pushed into it by Sky, who at the time said it was the only small, single shooter HD camera that it would accept) she has since got used to the benefits of tapeless working.
GLOBETROTTING WITH XDCAM “One big advantage is there are fewer moving parts so tapeless cameras are less likely to break down. Certainly the PMW-EX1 stood up really well to the heat of the jungle on An Idiot Abroad.” Using the PDW-700 and PDW-F800 as main cameras on the globetrotting series Riley’s director of photography found extras such as picture cache and slo-mo particularly useful. “Plus we avoided the danger of drives storing solid state media failing on location,” she says. “Instead, we backed all our EX material up to Professional Disc using the U1
USB drives that comes as standard. This gave us a lot more confidence in the stability of our rushes – plus the benefit of an immediate archive.”
AGENDA SETTING AT TINOPOLIS One task in Riley’s in-tray is training across the company. “What you find with file-based technology is that initially there is a lot to take on board so it’s important that we provide our production teams with training – basic but important stuff such as how to label clips, how to drag and drop files, how to make sure your material is there and how many back ups to make.” The other part of her role will be to inject consistency and continuity into tapeless working methods. “Lots of companies in the group have bought kit as they have taken their first steps into file-based, but the danger is that we end up with cupboards full of stuff which nobody knows is there or how to use. What I am doing is trying to utilise those assets and come up with a standardised system of working at Mentorn and Sunset+Vine. In effect designing the company’s workflow is my remit over the next few months.”

A two per cent saving doesn’t sound much but when you are talking about a multi- million pound budget it’s significant ”
