A CAMERA TO FIT THE CRIME The PDW-700 gave DoP Ian Bradshaw the ideal combi- nation of file-based acquisition and ready-made storage

When Title Role technical director Ian Bradshaw looked at the different options for shooting his latest six part series Crimes That Shook Britainone factor was paramount.

As a DoP by trade, Bradshaw wanted a high quality, shoulder-mounted camcorder capable of shooting interviews as well as dramatised reconstructions of famous crimes such as the case of convicted murderer Kenneth Noye. With a basic requirement for acquisition at 50Mb/s from broadcaster Crime & Investigation Network, the PDW-700 was the obvious choice. File- based production was one key requirement, but there were plenty of other benefits, as Bradshaw soon discovered. “It stood out because it shoots to XDCAM Professional Discs, which act as an instant archive – meaning I don’t have to worry about storage for at least 50 years, nor do I have to constantly worry about how much storage I have left, or think about making back

ups onto raided drives –which can be time consuming.” The camera’s ability to create proxy thumbnails is another important feature for Bradshaw. “For me it’s one of the strongest features, allowing me to look back at clips instantly, review them and check for continuity, plus I can remove discs and later reinsert them into the camera and the PDW-700 will automatically pick up the timecode where it left off.” “The optical discs mean that you’ll never have to

worry about over recording, as you do with tape, because the camera automatically locates free space on the disc and tells you when its full,” he adds. The cameras also enable producers to offload video files onto USB sticks which can be slotted into desktop PCs for logging or transcribing. “This means that any computer in the office can become a logging station – which is pretty useful when you are up against it.”
