ig Canoe’s own Cynthia Hendry creates art with earth’s natural and organic medium: plants. Everywhere in Big Canoe and the surrounding area, residential and commercial,
Cynthia’s fingertips have left their signature through her Woodland Gardens Landscape Services. Cynthia offers innovative and effective landscaping solutions to Big Canoe’s challenging gardening environment, from a complete landscape plan and installation to simply having her walk the property with you while you take notes on her recommendations. Differences • “Gardening in these mountains is
different,” advises Cynthia. “The big contrast between Atlanta gardens and those in Big Canoe is the cooler environment. Our designs are unique as well. We use a natural form and placement of the plant material for most of our properties,” she adds. Cynthia also reports Big Canoe properties are better
served by having more species diversity in the design. Using many plants blooming or fruiting at varied times of the year presents beneficial insects and wildlife with a more favorable environment. Trends • Homeowners are becoming more
environmentally conscious, a practice Cynthia agrees with. “Since our water comes from our mountains, we don’t want to be using unnecessary chemicals. One of the best remedies for pests and disease is species diversity,” says Cynthia. “Suburbia’s overuse of plants like the Bartlett Pear and Leyland Cypress attracted more disease and ruined the plant.” What are the trends in Big Canoe landscapes? “Low

along the edge of the drive. Stone walls, outdoor rooms, and well-designed entries have immediate payback in curb appeal and later in selling price. Since the downturn in new home construction,
more of Woodland Gardens’ business is maintenance. Cynthia’s team personalizes maintenance programs for clients, and offers an example. “One homeowner had a well-designed landscape — the bones are in place —but the intention of the designer’s scheme was unfulfilled because there was no communication with the plants. Pruning is the gardener’s communication time with the plant. ‘Snip, I want you to grow this way. Snip, snip, you are crowding your neighbor too much. I want to see both your profiles. Snip, snip, snip, I want to see your bones as your red bark is sooo beautiful in winter.’ We plan to sculpt her beautiful landscape every three months. That and a little mulch is all the design needs.” Looking Toward Winter • For clients who want color
in the winter garden, Cynthia recommends ensuring the bones of the garden are in place first with evergreens and plant material that have winter interest, like our native deciduous holly that can be bent with tomato red fruit, yet is leafless in winter. Several native deciduous shrubs like Itea and blueberries hold their fall red leaves until Christmas. Her favorite Itea is Henry’s Garnet, which turns a rich burgundy in fall. The one question all homeowners have? “How do

maintenance. While Big Canoe has over 200 members in the garden club, many would rather be involved in the hundreds of other fun things to do in these mountains,” says Cynthia. Residents continue to want designs inspired by the mountains. Water features and well- placed, beautiful boulders can transform a landscape, and deer don’t eat handsome boulders
you protect a garden from deer?” Some areas of Big Canoe have more deer and less food in the forest for them. Those neighborhoods need landscapes designed with what Cynthia calls nines and tens in plant material.
A ten? Deer hate it. A one? Deer hear the all-you-can-eat buffet signal. Woodland Gardens’ maintenance program includes a routine and an as-needed spray for deer, as well as the use of approved fencing and other deterrents.
