“I sweat the details most homeowners never even see.” — DAVID PEAGLER, Peagler Custom Homes
Getting the most from your home in the new economy

ig Canoe homeowners want their homes to be an extension of their mountain lifestyle: They love to entertain family and friends, host extended family for the holidays,
and relax in their at-home retreats. “People move to Big Canoe to start a new phase of their lives,” says David Peagler of Peagler Custom Homes and newly-debuted Cane Creek Construction. “Clients have a vision of what they want in their homes: I take that vision and turn it into results — on time and on budget.” David opened Cane Creek Construction to reflect the changing needs of Big Canoe homeowners who needed to update and remodel their existing homes after they realized they’d be staying in them longer than they ever anticipated. David offers new construction through Peagler Custom Homes, and remodeling through Cane Creek Construction. Home trends in Big Canoe “Kitchens, baths, and porches are the most requested remodeling projects I get,” says Peagler. “People want high-impact updates to rooms where they spend most of their time.” David is candid with homeowners, advising them not to expect to recoup their remodeling investment dollar-for-dollar in today’s economy. Instead, homeowners should look to transform a space for more comfortable living. And if they are looking to move, homeowners absolutely need to update to make their home competitive. “I advise my clients on the best remodeling changes to sell their homes and make them stand out in a marketplace flooded with inventory.” David not only has a gift for building
homes but client relationships as well. Most of his clients are repeat customers, who come to him again and again for new homes, updates to older homes, and they refer family and friends. “When a couple comes to me for a project, I talk to both the husband and wife to find out their needs. Usually, men are looking for a great value, while women want function and beauty. I work with both to ensure everyone is happy,” says David. A hands-on builder
“I understand your home is far more than the most expensive purchase you’ll ever make: It’s about family,” says Peagler, who lives and works in Big Canoe. David’s family has called Big Canoe home for eight years. His wife Maria is an award-winning author who works out of their home and teaches locally, and their sons attend Pickens County schools. David makes it a point to be involved in the community: He is Scoutmaster of Big Canoe Troop 20 and his family attends Big Canoe Chapel. David is a fifth-generation timber
craftsman from south Georgia, where his family has been in the timber business since the 1800s. David’s passion for building extends to doing much of the labor himself. “I’m a hands-on builder and I do much of the work in your home with my own hands.” His own home contains many of his designs, including mantels with antique wood from his family farm, armoires and farm kitchen tables. your home will seem awfully expensive when you can’t find your contractor a year later and you call me to fix inferior workmanship. Unlicensed and uninsured contractors are no bargain,” says David.
He admits to being a perfectionist when it comes to his clients’ homes. “I sweat the details many homeowners never even see. Often times I’ll be the one pulling out the plumbing in a bathroom remodel, and I make sure we install framing in the walls so towel rods don’t rip out the drywall. I treat every home I work on as if it were my own, or even better, my mama’s.” David became involved in a remodeling
project in his own childhood home in south Georgia, where his mother still lives. “My mom is in her seventies, and her mobility is limited. In a grand 1890’s Victorian farmhouse, that’s a problem.” David updated her kitchen, where she loves to cook, to make it more accessible. He remodeled her bathroom to prevent her from falling, and transformed the front entryway so it was easier for her to navigate. David continually updates his certifications so his clients get the best and latest technology and products in home building and remodeling. David is a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist, a Green- Certified Builder, and a Lead-Certified Renovator.
