Position of responsibility

one point and efforts to address environmental impact are usually given short shrift and dismissed as ‘green wash’ and marketing spin.

While some of the criticism may be justified many companies appear to have woken up to their environmental responsibilities and are putting serious thought into producing products that enhance their green credentials and limit their effect on the environment. Conserving energy is now seen as a key objective by many IT departments and it makes sense for manufacturers to produce energy efficient products that appeal to installers and end users alike. Carbon offsetting is a method employed by an increasing number of energy hungry firms and is seen as a way of putting something back. The basic principle of offsetting is that you are redeeming the amount of CO2 generated by your company by investing in a scheme or project that will remove or prevent the equivalent amount entering the atmosphere - for example, sustaining an area of rainforest in South America. CO2 offset in the UK is less than one per cent of the country’s annual emissions so the practice is certainly not going to reverse the impact of global warming. It does, however, portray a positive message and demonstrate a degree of environmental awareness. Data centres are huge power drains but even here we

are starting to see so called ‘green data centres’ and there have even been mentions of ‘carbon neutral data centres’. Whether or not there could ever be such a thing as a carbon neutral data centre is a point of considerable debate but it does at least reinforce the belief that steps are being taken to shrink those oversized carbon footprints.
