KNOTT’S PRESERVED BY CHRISTOPHER MERRITT AND J ERIC LYNXWILER

From the earliest days of Knott's Berry Farm, when Walter Knott and his wife Cordeli were serving up baskets of berries and chicken dinners, to the advent of themed rides and fast rollercoasters, it's all in this new book celebrating the California theme park. It's a story of how a man and a woman remained true to their values, sharing profits and credit whenever they could. Heartwarming? Yes. Decidedly so. This is the book that's filled with as much

nostalgia as the park itself. Co-author Christopher Merritt is an artist and designer working in the theme park industry. Co-author J Eric Lynxwiler grew up in Southern California and spent one school year working at Knott's shooting gallery while earning his degree in urban anthropology at UCLA. Knott's Preserved: From Boysenberry to Theme Park is brimming with more than 200 images, most of them published for the first time. Available in both harback and paperback, it is available via online stores like Amazon, at the park, or direct from Angel City Press, the publisher.

www.angelcitypress.com STEEL PIER: SHOWPLACE OF THE

NATION BY STEVE LIEBOWITZ Today the Steel Pier in Atlantic City, New Jersey, is home to the Catanoso Brothers' collection of amusement rides and games. It's one of several amusement piers that dot the Jersey Shore. But for much of the 20th Century, there was nothing else like it. From 1898 onwards, the pier mirrored American society and was the centre of American entertainment on the East Coast. There were big bands, movies,

sideshows, acrobats, even Frank Sinatra and Miss America (not necessarily on the same bill). Throngs of people lined up to get a seat so they could watch brave horses and riders dive into a pool of water. Today, the novelty and innocence of the golden age seems a world apart.

Yet it was an institution, a grand treat served up with gusto and cotton candy. Author Steve Liebowitz has researched Atlantic City entertainment history and the Steel Pier for many years. Here he examines the pier over the course of a century, beginning with a brief history of seaside entertainment piers and competing piers in Atlantic City such as the Million Dollar, Heinz and Steeplechase Piers. This large-format hardback coffee table book features 264 pages and 227 historic photographs, illustrations, poster and advertising images. For anyone interested in the historical development of the amusement industry in North America it is a must-read.
