The MBO The future starts here
It’s now two months since the Pensord leadership passed from outgoing Chief Executive Tony Jones to the new team of Darren Coxon and Karl Gater. In this issue we look more closely at the company’s new senior team, and ask Pensord’s stakeholders, business partners and staff what they feel about the management buyout and their thoughts on the future.
Darren Coxon
Pensord’s new Managing Director has over 20 years experience in magazine printing. Darren joined Pensord as Commercial Director in 2002 and since then has overseen the implementation of new technologies and workflows, and managed teams to successfully deliver positive change, improved efficiencies and profitable growth.
Karl Gater
Karl joined Pensord in December 2007, further strengthening the link between production and the commercial team. Using his 22 years experience in print, Karl has applied his practical experience to improve efficiencies and workflows in all production areas, having a positive influence on quality and delivery of production on time – achieving the best figures on record during 2009.
Apart from having responsibility for the operation of the plant, he has played a key role in introducing:
• the Group Induction programme, allowing existing employees to experience and understand all areas of the business
• the Waste Reduction Team, who have helped the company identify savings of over £150k since commencing in 2009
• Environmental standards, including FSC/PEFC, ISO14001, and now working closely with the PPA Carbon Footprinting Working Group.
Karl is married to Helen, a Biomedical Scientist in the NHS. Karl spends his spare time exploring the vast coastline of South Wales with his wife, and refurbishing his 400 year old house.

He has also revolutionised the customer facing areas of the business to enhance the customer experience, while increasing efficiency and capacity throughout. Darren’s underlying philosophy is: “the customer is our primary focus.”
In addition, Darren has fronted the business from a sales perspective, and played a major part in
delivering the business growth in recent years.
At weekends Darren can be found cheering on his beloved QPR with his son Harry, or in Oxwich on the Gower Peninsular in Wales, often with daughter Wallace and always with fiancée Claire and a few friends.
