Two Sides v Greenwash
Two Sides is the campaign Pensord is backing which addresses the misunderstandings and myths at large on the issue of paper and its effect on the environment. Here Two Sides Director Martyn Eustace updates us on the latest news from the campaign front.
“Barclays has become the latest corporate to listen to Two Sides and joins both BT and British Gas in withdrawing environmental claims in support of e-billing. Encouraging customers to get their bills online and also stating that this is better for the environment contravenes CSR Europe and CAP (Code of Advertising Practice) guidelines. It’s a simple case of Greenwash.
“Whilst the efficiency of electronic communication is clear and initiatives to reduce waste are to be encouraged, Two Sides is taking action if ‘go paperless’ initiatives are promoted as ‘green’ or seek to gain credibility by purporting to aid sustainability at the expense of the print and paper industry.
“It is increasingly clear that electronic communication and in particular the energy requirements of the increasing worldwide network of servers which are necessary to store all the information needed for immediate access, has a significant and increasing possible higher environmental cost than a centrally produced and distributed bill. Print and paper may well be the environmentally sustainable way to communicate.
“It is encouraging that, with Two Sides’ help, responsible organisations are now thinking carefully about the statements they make and ensuring that they are not simply repeating old misconceptions. Members are urged to report all cases of Greenwash. Two Sides will continue to intervene when notified and will immediately take the necessary steps to alert the relevant regulators.”

Greenwash is…
…not painting a true picture of green issues
Carbon Calculator
In the latest stage of Pensord’s involvement with the PPA’s Carbon Calculator, Pensord welcomed Rose Benjamin, Head of Environment and Production with the PPA, and Michael Sturges, a consultant from Innventia who is supporting the PPA in the development of their magazine carbon calculator.
The calculator is free to PPA members, and allows publishers to calculate the carbon footprint of an individual magazine title.
The PPA’s visit to Pensord forms
part of a wider exercise by the PPA and Innventia to update the carbon calculator with data from several major magazine printers across the UK.
Pensord’s Operations Director, Karl Gater, who sits on the PPA’s Carbon Calculator working group said: “The information will ultimately give publishers a more detailed understanding of the processes involved in magazine production and how these various factors can influence a title’s carbon footprint.”
Rose Benjamin said: “The PPA is extremely grateful to all the printers involved in this project.
As well as demonstrating their strong environmental credentials, the information they have provided will ensure publishers can better measure and manage their carbon footprint.
“In particular I would like to thank Pensord for their hospitality. We were very impressed by the site and the thorough datasets that we will feed into the calculator, and I look forward to continuing our work together in future.”
