From Streets to Galleries C
ast manhole and utility covers have inspired artists like Bobbi Mastrangelo and Kim Chris-
tiansen to create works of art that have been on display in galleries around the country.
Mastrangelo uses canvas, paper and sculpture to feature castings she has encountered in real life. For many of her works, Mastrangelo takes rubbings of the cast covers in their element and transforms them into pieces of art in her studio. “Celebration of Water” (right) is constructed in handmade paper and fiber and depicts various water utility covers.
Christiansen takes rubbings of utility covers with a graphite stick and later often works color into the images. His “Crescent Box Water Meter” (bottom right) was pro- duced from a rubbing taken in New Orleans. His “New Millenium Blast Off 01/01/01” (bottom left) is of a Washington, D.C., sewer cover. METAL
