Casting Critical to Oil Drill Safety Cast Component: Steel insert plate for oil blow-out

preventer.

Material: Nickel-chromium-molybdenum low alloy steel.

Process: Green sand casting.

Casting Supplier: Pacifi c Steel Castings, Berkeley, Calif.

• The nominal performance requirements for the steel plate castings are 85 ksi yield strength, 235 HB Brinell hardness, 0.03-in. tolerance on machined surfaces, and between 500 and 900 RMS fi nish on as-cast surfaces.

• Typical steel insert plates, which reinforce a packing ring used to shut off over-pressure gas and oil fl ow in drilling equipment, measure 14 x 6 in. with a 2-in. thick center bar and weigh 25 lbs.

• Although the individual part did not require a core, the metalcaster utilized one to produce two castings in the same mold, cutting production costs.
