base for the various casting alloys, molding and coremaking materials, and feeding systems materials like sleeves, chills and feeding pads for simulation software.

COMPANY: P&H Mining Equipment POSITION: Procurement Specialist, Raw Materials We use FEA (MSC Nastran) to

evaluate castings, such as shoes, tumblers, snubber arms, etc. We also utilize a design review process that involves the casting supplier prior to any formal release of the part. We also run a proprietary fatigue soft- ware, which uses non-load-history dependent algorithms. But we also have a more conventional program called MSC Fatigue. We do not have solidification

software in house, but we do utilize it through our casting supply base. As for non-computer-based tools, we apply engineering design principles, including the analytical evaluation of stress, and layout for form, fi t and function. We have used some dynamic analysis software, including MSC Corp.’s ADAMS and Working Model 2-D motion software. For some parts, we engage heavily

in material analysis and properties. This is determined primarily via past history and basic analysis techniques and then verifi ed with testing. A big aid in our casting design-

ing is early and consistent discussion with the metalcaster—the concurrent engineering process. We also utilize casting-knowledgeable employees to provide castability guidance.

COMPANY: FMC Technologies Inc., Stephenville, Texas POSITION: Casting Commodity Strate- gist, Fluid Control We use Unigraphics NX6 for

sketching models. We also use cast- ing suppliers for general information on design.

Solidifi cation software, while cited as expensive by some, was said to be important by a number of designers. Some rely on their casting suppliers to provide the software, others contract with the software providers on a case-by-case basis.
