Customer: Dana Automotive Systems Group, Maumee, Ohio.
• The carrier housing serves as the front axle differential housing for BMW’s X-5 sport utility vehicle.
• The diecaster altered the original mold and gating design to improve the cast- ability and quality of the 9.06-lb. hous- ing using fl ow simulation software.
• The new tooling and process design, which was similar to that used in the squeeze casting process, led to a total scrap rate at Dana of 0.07%, down from 30-40%.
