specific measures to ensure quality because the components are too ex- pensive to produce rejects. A reliable control of the manufacturing pro- cess has to be installed, in real time, during machining. Coordinate measuring machines

(CMMs) play a vital role in ensuring the accuracy and quality of the components. For traditional customers of CMMs, such as automotive parts suppliers, the stan-

n the fast growing market for wind power systems, quality as- surance according to international industrial standards has become an important issue. Gearboxes

dard machine size is around 35.3 cu. ft. (1 cu. m). But applications for printing machines, truck diesel engines, energy and aircraft parts have made it necessary to develop a series of larger machines. Carl Zeiss’s MMZ series addresses these applications. The MMZ-G model is used for large precision components, such as gearboxes and other wind turbine com- ponents. Sizes are available from 6.6 x 9.8 x 6.6 ft. (2 x 3 x 2 m) up to systems that measure gears and bearings up to 16.5 ft. (5 m) in diameter and housings or other machined parts up to 36.1 x 16.4 x 11.5 ft. (11 x 5 x 3.5 m). The rigid machine tool, which

moves on linear guideways, is driven by a ball screw spindle and does not consume air. The machine can be equipped with floor integrated rotary tables, holding up to 26,455 lbs. (12,000 kg). Gears can be measured with or

without the rotary table. For some he- lical or bevel gears, a rotary table can help allow full access to gear flanks. With the standard Calypso software

included with the machines, all geo- metric dimensions can be measured, including form and position tolerances. Adding the Gear-Pro software allows for measuring of internal and external gears, straight or helical. Bevel gears and worms also are measurable. The MMZ-G machine’s Ziess Vast

probe head measures single points but is optimized for surface scanning. Navigator technology allows scanning using long, flexible styli at high speed rates without losing accuracy. The probe head can hold probes up to 1.3 lbs. (600 g) and 31.5 in. (800 mm) in all directions, making it possible to reach deep features in housings.
