thing possible,” Zick said. “On our drawings, I will include draft, because I know [it assists the metalcaster]. I don’t dictate where the parting line goes, but I want to know where it is going to be. The more you understand about the process, the more efficiently you’ll be able to design the part.” It is that back and forth that Mani-
towoc Cranes finds invaluable in its engineering process. While it currently is striving to maintain its casting ex- pertise, it recognizes it can be just as important to work with metalcasters that understand its applications. “From a technical standpoint, the
most important thing is communication. There is just as much value in [the met- alcaster] knowing what the application is going to be,” Zick said. “There’s value in them understanding the application, not just blindly making a part. For Zick and the other designers on
the Manitowoc Cranes team, replacing the metalcasting expertise the company lost months ago will continue to be an ongoing project. “The first time I designed a casting,
I didn’t have an appreciation for the process,” Zick said. “But after going through that, I know it helps the design to understand it.”
