steel wire tray system, which was installed as risers and at high level, suspended from the ceilings and hidden in the ceiling voids. During the project NG Bailey had 250 people on site at

any one time. They were supported by 40 people in the management team, who took care of areas such as CAD design and off-site warehousing. NG Bailey adopted a ‘just in time’ approach to product delivery on-site, due to there being very little on-site storage. Black comments: ‘We developed a local logistics centre

for the site based in Warrington. It allowed us to hold stock in reserve so we never ran out and could get anything we needed here in under two hours.’

Environment Peel Holdings’ total investment in Phase 1 of MediaCityUK is in the region of £500m, and at every stage of its development the environment and sustainability have been high on the agenda. All of MediaCityUK’s buildings aspire to the highest environmental and energy saving ratings and it is the first development in the world to become a BREEAM approved sustainable community.

Some materials, such as the paving for the piazza, were delivered via the Manchester Ship Canal by barge, reducing the need for emission-heavy motorway journeys. Black says: ‘While this formed part of the original tender requirement, we were careful to use any means we could of reducing our carbon footprint.’
