SI Cannock members went out for the day with their husbands… dressed in St Trinian outfits and using their bus passes to travel from Penkridge to Ludlow and back in aid of a South African crèche. Monica and Bill Humphries and Betty and Melvin Morgan had a fun day travelling to Wolverhampton, Bridgnorth, Ludlow, Shrewsbury, Telford and Stafford and later presented a cheque for £1000 to Trish Smith, another member of the Club who spends part of each year in South Africa and supports a crèche for 65 children in Mfuluni, Cape Town. Trish said she had no words to thank Betty and Monica – the money means they can make major improvements to the crèche.

SI Cambridge welcomed Alison Pegrum, Chair of the Cambridge branch of Parkinson’s UK as a guest at their Summer outing, a visit to the gardens of Madingley Hall. The branch was the chosen charity of IPP Janet, and, following an excellent guided tour and tea, President Jenny and members looked on as she presented Alison with a cheque for £2000, the amount raised by the Club during her year of office.

SI Dhaka held an advocacy press conference at the National Press Club in June against the backdrop of the rising brutality and violence against women and young girls throughout Bangladesh and the South Asia region. Speakers included human rights activists from SI Dhaka as well as from high profile women’s organisations including three powerful male activists working in varied fields. The Press and the media were well represented with the presence of correspondents from the leading dailies and TV channels. Speakers focused on the need to increase political and social awareness and on taking meaningful legal action – not only through a show of arrest in the short term but to carry out

SI Coventry President Carol Wright last year chose The British Heart Foundation as the charity. There were several varied fund raising events but the main one was a most enjoyable concert followed by a superb supper provided by Club members. The members’ work, together with the support of two local schools, President Carol was able to present the British Heart Foundation with a cheque for £2400.

the justice process to its ultimate end. Based on research evidence, speakers highlighted the brutal and savage forms of repression by the perpetrators ranging from teasing, beating, stoning, whipping, acid throwing, torching, not to mention the self-immolation (suicide) by the desperate and helpless victims themselves. The event received wide coverage by the press and the TV channels the next day.

SI Gravesend has sponsored young carers in Kent County Council’s countywide Try Angle Awards scheme for three successive years. The awards recognise the talents and achievements of young people in their communities. This year the Club’s award in the Good Friends & Young Carers category was won by Michaela Barton from Gravesham, described as a “truly remarkable daughter and sister” who supported her mother and cared for her younger siblings throughout a difficult time. It was presented by President Elect Isobel Kesby at a gala evening on 8 July. Certificates were also presented to three others in the category.

SI Onitsha Niger’s project focus is on health, so the President and members went to town to create awareness of HIV/AIDS with the slogan: STOP THE STIGMATISATION.

They had discovered that people with HIV/AIDS die more from fear of stigmatisation than the disease itself; because many positive patients do not want their identity revealed and many do not want to know their status, thus causing the alarming spread of the infection. The day ended with a generous donation of £650 worth of drugs and food which was presented to patients in Onitsha General Hospital with HIV/AIDS.

SI Heswall and District marked its 60th Anniversary purchasing a bench seat with a brass commemorative plaque. It is set in the centre of Heswall and hopefully will prove a useful resting place for people when walking to the shops. The Club decided to provide a seat as a legacy after carrying out research for the PAC project ‘Where have all the Chairs Gone’ initiated by SI Nantwich. The council was supportive and will be responsible for its future maintenance. SI Taw and Torridge took part in the Braunton (North Devon) ‘Relay for Life’, run under the name ‘Community Spirit’ and raised almost £2000, to join other funds to bring the event total to £45000. The Taw and Torridge Club is quite young so it is very proud of this achievement, running for the third year, especially as they also had three cancer survivors in the team, who did the opening lap with 18 others, then celebrated with cake and champagne!
