2 SEPTEMBER 2010 Soroptimist News Hello again!
The build up to the SIGBI Conference has now begun in earnest. Extra police have been drafted in to Manchester to cope with the huge influx of women wishing to shop, eat, drink and generally enjoy themselves. The local authorities have issued guidance to hoteliers on managing the crowds and all journalists have received the ‘heads-up’ on the fact that there will be some excellent photo opportunities during the Conference period. Well obviously, only the last piece of that is really true, (Journalists have a warped sense of humour) but there is no doubting that SIGBI members will be bringing a certain frisson to the vibrant Manchester leisure scene (see the cover pic!), with jolly gatherings, meeting old friends, remembering previous conferences and, inevitably voicing strong opinions on every aspect of the city, the shops, restaurants, hotels and of course, the Conference. There is room for everyone in this city, a city so wonderful they named it after me - or at least some long gone predecessor of mine!
Dear Sisters In commemoration of our 25th Anniversary, we commissioned the extension to our School building in Lawanson, Lagos on Thursday 29th July, 2010. This was performed by President Theresa Odogwu who was assisted by the President Elect, Bjorg Lawal-Solarin.
We also recently held a fundraising Luncheon at the home of a member Funmilayo Odunsi, to provide money towards the building of functional toilets for the school.
Congratulations
Congratulations to two new Clubs in SIGBI which were due to be Chartered during August – SI Uyanda, Harare (Zimbabwe) and SI Madurai (India). Details of the Charter ceremonies will be included in the November issue of Soroptimist News.

I’d recommend that you register now if you haven’t already done so, choose your accommodation from the thousands of options available and prepare to be excited. The Conference Committee have worked very
hard to make this event one to remember (as indeed, Conference Committees always do, and they always succeed!). There are some very interesting speakers, entertainment in the evenings, opportunities to hear about SIGBI activity across the world and the chance to have your say at the AGM. This is, to many Soroptimists, the main reason for attending Conference – and it can be very entertaining!
I may or may not see you there, but make sure you go – and enjoy it!
Next issue is November - deadline 1st October. Please email contributions to: soroptimist@ written-image. com.
