baltimore — No talk about Manager Buck Showalter’s successful first month at the helm of the Orioles was complete without mentioning that his team still hadn’t faced theNewYorkYankeesand Boston Red Sox, the long- time heavyweights of the American League East. It was only one night,
but the resurgent Orioles pushed back at their long- time bullies. Brian Matusz pitched six solid innings, Koji Uehara notched a five-out save and the Luke Scott and Felix Pie both homered as the Orioles beat Josh Beckett and the Boston Red Sox, 5-2, in front of an announced18,247 atCam- den Yards. The Orioles’ fourth
straight win allowed them to close August with a 17-11 record. The last time they won as many as
GREG FIUME/GETTY IMAGES NickMarkakis is welcomed home by teammate Adam Jones in the first inning.
17 games in a month was September 2004 when they went 18-11. They also improved to
7-6 this season against the Red Sox, including a 5-2 mark at Camden Yards. It marks the first time they’ve clinched a win- ning home season series against Boston since 1998. In his third straight
quality start, Matusz al- lowed just two runs over
six-plus innings, making one of his fewmistakes on Jed Lowrie’s two-run homer in the fifth inning. The rookie left-hander
exited thegameafter issu- ing a leadoff walk to J.D. Drewto start the seventh. Lowrie then greeted Jim Johnson with a single, and Boston had men on secondandthird with just one out following Bill Hall’s sacrifice bunt. However, Johnson got
Marco Scutaro to ground out on a nice play by rookie third baseman Josh Bell and then he cul- minated a nine-pitch bat- tle with pinch hitter Dan- iel Nava by striking him out on a 2-2 curveball. Leading 3-2 entering
the bottom of the eighth, Scott and Pie gave the Orioles insurance runs with solo homers off lefty Felix Doubront. —Baltimore Sun
