The other vehicle was one of two supplied to Epsom & Ewell Borough Council, tailored to carry a ride-on mower. Produced with a full-width storage box behind the cab for strimmers and other small equipment, this unit has a 1550kg payload. Its 4.2m long flat bed deck with 1820mm internal width between the wheel arches allows the transportation of a John Deere 1435 4WD mower fitted with a FastBack Commercial 62in rear discharge mower deck.
Dual-use ramps
A practical weight-saving feature of the vehicles is that the two light alloy loading ramps become the sides of the body during road travel. As well as saving space and weight, this dual use allows the vehicle to transport a greater variety of equipment safely in an enclosed space. As an option, KFS can supply a full-width, fold-down rear loading ramp.
A short test drive of the laden demonstrator revealed that its 88.0kW (120hp) engine provided more than sufficient power. The very low centre of gravity and torsion bar rear suspension provided a stable ride - you do not get the body roll that can be experienced on a traditional rear sprung vehicle.
The wide track body option allows transportation of ride-on mowers, whilst the body sides double up as loading ramps.
Illustrating its ability to produce bespoke units to suit particular customer requirements, KFS is supplying three special beaver tail vehicles to access equipment hirer, Smart Platforms. These are to be used to form part of a self-drive hire package with a 14m maximum working height, spider-style rubber tracked access platform.
