Sport is for winners The DTVE 50
UK operators have been impacted by Sky Sports rulings, whilst German operators had mixed fortunes.
market over the last few weeks following reg- ulator Ofcom’s decision to force BSkyB to sell its Sky Sports channels at a wholesale price. BT’s decision to offer the channels for as little as £6 per month seemed to have little impact on Sky’s shares, which dipped slightly to below 695p but rose again to 700p by July 22. The 700p per share bid made last month by parent company News Corp was a sign that the group’s infrastructure and marketing investment was now complete, analysts, said. Virgin Media’s shares climbed on the news that it would offer Sky Sports HD channels from August. Shares opened at US$18.46 (€14.30) on July 22, up from US$17.67 at the time of our last Stockwatch. Broadcaster Modern Times Group also saw a strong per- formance after announcing solid results for its pay-TV businesses. Its share price stood at SEK466.80 (€49.43), up from SEK442. Not such good news for German cable operator Primacom which saw its shares slump to €0.248 from €4.75 in a period that saw its near-bankruptcy followed by the first stage of restructuring after the operator’s shareholders transferred the business to Luxembourg-based private investors Medfort for an estimated €300m.

launched an IPO in April. From a start of €22.50, shares hit a high of €25.69 on July 15. Free-to-air broadcaster ITV exceeded the goals analysts had set for it, with advertising revenues up 45% on its main channel in June compared with the same month last year, thanks to the impact of the World Cup. Shares climbed to 55p following a previous slump. However, shares dipped again, by 3.9% to 52p after Merrill Lynch turned nega- tive ahead of the broadcaster’s strategic review due on August 3. ●
