Baltics. In the Nordics, MTG added 11,000 net new premium IPTV subscribers during the quar- ter giving it a total of 167,000. The number of premium DTH customers remained stable at 666,000. The number of basic DTH subscribers was down 10,000 year-on-year to 45,000. Net sales from the Nordic pay-TV business were up 4% year-on- year to SEK1.1bn (€116m). MTG’s emerging markets pay-TV busi- ness had 45,467,000 mini-pay TV subscribers at the end of June, up from 40,182,000 a year earli- er. The number of premium DTH subscribers was up 20,000 year- on-year to 224,000. Net sales were up 3% year-on-year to SEK225m. MTG reported total net sales up 8% year-on-year to SEK3.9bn. Operating income was up 26% year on year to SEK603m.
DSL > TeliaSonera growth Swedish and Finnish telco TeliaSonera’s digital TV sub- scriber base grew by 131,000 year-on-year to 800,000 at the end of June, according to the company’s latest financials. About 36% of TeliaSonera’s broadband subscribers also take TV services from the company. Overall broadband subscriptions rose by 75,000 year-on-year to 2.4 million. TeliaSonera announced earlier this month that it was selling Danish cable and telecom subsidiary Stofa to private-equity group Ratos for DKK1.1bn (€148m) on a cash and debt-free basis (see p.4).

CAB > Cablecom HD VOD Liberty Global-owned Swiss cable operator Cablecom has launched an HD video-on-demand service, offering a range of Hollywood movies from CHF7.50 (€5.60). Cablecom will offer movies

including Avatar, Up in the Air, The Hurt Locker, Alice in Wonderlandand Alvin and the Chipmunks. The service will be available to all subscribers with an HD set-top box. Cablecom is also providing a free catch-up service from Swiss television for one week after the initial broad- cast of shows.

CAB > Du launches SVOD UAE service provider Du has launched a subscription video-on- demand service in partnership with SeaChange-owned On Demand Group. The SVOD serv- ice, which will be marketed as “Unlimited Video on Demand”, complements Du’s existing trans- actional VOD service launched in December. It will offer a range of programming across different genres, including movies, for AED75 (€16.22) a month.

DSL > Hunt reveals plans The UK government has revealed details of its plans for the media and broadband industries ahead of the introduction of a planned new communications bill in 2012. Key elements in the government’s pro- gramme for media and broadband, unveiled by culture secretary Jeremy Hunt, include pushing back the target of universal broadband coverage of 2Mbps from 2012 to 2015 and a scaling back of regula- tor Ofcom’s areas of responsibility. The government also plans to abol- ish local cross-media ownership rules and to allow licensing of new local TV stations from the summer of 2012. Negotiations over a new BBC licence fee settlement will begin in April 2012, following a deci- sion on whether to allocate some of it to fund broadband rollouts in rural areas.
