Industry Faces

Robert Joyce Heads Newly Formed Conglomeration of Wheelabrator, DISA Robert Joyce had to sell Wheelabra-

tor Corp., LaGrange, Ga., before he could join it. Joyce was serving as chief operating

officer of USFilter when it was acquired by Vivendi SA in 1999. As a result of the transaction, Joyce was responsible for divesting several assets of the water company from 1999 to 2003 to help pay down the acquisition debt. Wheelabra- tor was the last unit to go. As part of the negotiations with

the Wheelabrator buyer, Joyce was brought on in 2003 as the unit’s new president. Several years later, he would become president and chief executive officer of an even larger collection of metalcasting industry suppliers. In 2007, DISA, Herlev, Denmark, came

up for sale. Joyce and the Wheelabrator primary shareholder Mid Europa Partners believed the company would be a fit for their strategy. Accordingly, DISA was purchased in Sept. 2008, and on May 1, 2009, the newly formed Norican Group was given legal clearance by the German government to merge the two companies. Today, Norican Group maintains both the DISA and Wheelabrator brand names.

Norican Group CEO Robert Joyce speaks at the opening of a plant in Poland.

DISA encapsulates the company’s parts forming technology group, and Wheelabra- tor represents the segment of the business that deals with parts preparation technology (cleaning, strengthening and polishing). “There are two major strategic thrusts

for our combined group,” Joyce said. “We want to continue to bring innovation to our existing installed base and help our customers grow in the emerging markets.” According to Joyce, Norican’s clients

benefit from its international structure, technological expertise and century long application history. “Our customers in the metalcasting

industry constantly need to drive down their costs per part produced,” Joyce said. “Therefore, the key emphasis of all of our lines of business is to bring technology and services to these cus- tomers that demonstrably lower their overall lifecycle costs.”
