ParkWord August 2010 Queue jumping is a dirty word, so dirty it’s

actually two words, but at many parks guests can bypass the long lines by purchasing some sort of express pass. Still the fairest system in the industry, surely, is Disney’s Fastpass, which is free and open to all who arrive early enough to grab a pass for their favourite ride or attraction. But what if you want to jump, sorry bypass, the queues all day long? Several parks now offer systems or devices that let you do that, and some charge heavily for the priviledge, almost as much as the price of admission. Clearly that creates some sort of in-park apartheid, but nevertheless it’s part of some operator’s business models. Whereas such systems offer a benefit to those willling to pay, I encountered a particularly cruel scheme recently. Lockers next to rides are a great idea, especially for those of us that visit parks with cameras and other bulky items. However, rather than charging a flat rental fee of, say $1, the first 30 minutes were free, after which there was an escalting table of charges; the longer guests left their stuff, the more they paid. That seems fair enough, until you realise they were effectively being “fined” for queuing. Maybe they should buy an express pass.
