Simworx goes to the seaside

Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach in England has opened a new 4D effects theatre from Simworx. The 30-seat installation, which opened in June, is housed inside a building that previously accommodated a simulator. The film Curse of Skull Rock will be joined later in the year by Dracula 4D, a new production by Red Star Studio. Christie projectors are used together with high definition sound and 4D special effects including seat vibration, leg ticklers, water spray, wind, bubbles and lighting effects. “This has been something we've been looking at for a couple of years,” reveals Pleasure Beach managing director Albert Jones. “We are trying to add more indoor attractions because of the weather in the early and late part of the season. 3D is 'in' at the moment so it's good to do something topical and that the public is talking about. We wanted two films so we can cater for repeat visitors, which we get a lot of.” The Great Yarmouth installation is one of two effects theatres Simworx has supplied recently to a UK seaside resort. The other is at the rebuilt Grand Pier in Weston-super- Mare, full profile to follow soon in Park World.

Castaway Cove slips in another one!

Scott Simpson of Playland's Castaway Cove has found a way to shoehorn one more ride into his packed park in Ocean city, New Jersey. "We added a Zamperla Rockin' Tug,” he tells us. “The adjacent property was converted to residential units,” he tells Park World. “The staircase and handicap ramp that allowed access the old stores were no longer needed. We gained an area 21 by 30ft, and replaced the Sellner Dizzy Dragons with the Tug. So far we have been satisfied with the gross. The ride appeals to little kids with parents.”

King Cobra

Combining an intense riding experience with great visual impact and spectator appeal, King Cobra from Polin offers a unique waterpark experience. “The core feature of the patent pending slide," says Polin project manager Eyup Ispiroglu, "is its unique configuration that enables riders in double tubes to race through a circular path with twists, turns and the drop of their lives.” The ride starts inside a pair of tubes as riders race through a series of surprises inside the enclosed structure. Suddenly they come to what they think is the end of the ride, then drop down at an angle of 50 degrees, plunging 8-metres, accelerat- ing to a speed of 51 km/h. "The two riders are now on the same slide,” contin- ues Ispiroglu. “This is unique in the industry – two tubes leaving different slides and ending up side by side on the same sliding surface. The excitement of an une” But it doesn’t end there. The riders and their tubes now head into the mouth of Cobra with fog, jets of water, a high-pitched hiss and other effects.

Monster additions at the Steel Pier

The Steel Pier in Atlantic City, New Jersey, has introduced the first Drop ‘n’ Twist tower ride in North America. The 28-metre-tall attraction by the Italian manufacturer SBF/Visa seats 12 and is called the Monster Plunge, in recognition of a sponsorship deal with Coca Cola’s Monster Energy drink brand.

"The tower is the fourth ride that we introduced first to the North American market during our 19 years on the Jersey shore," notes Steel Pier president Anthony Catanoso. "This year we also added an SBF Chopper Train and a Zamperla Kite Flyer. We need to keep our ride package fresh. When we went to the IAAPA show we said we weren't going to buy any rides, but bought three. Apparently that's how it works." *Tony Rossi, proprietor of International Rides Management, has joined the Steel Pier as director of operations. "This is just an enhancement of our total service commitment to our clients," explains Rossi.
