established during Kennedy’s presi- dency, matches seniors with orga- nizations and individuals in need of help. It has three primary programs: Foster Grandparents, Senior Com- panions, and RSVP. With all three, you’ll receive preservice orienta- tion, training from the organization where you serve, and supplemental insurance. In some cases, volunteers might receive a small stipend. n If you enjoy working with children, then Foster Grandparents is for you. You might provide one-on-one tutor- ing to students struggling with math, read to toddlers, or mentor a child. n If you prefer working with some- one more mature, Senior Companions connects volunteers with other seniors who need a little assistance. By doing minor chores or running errands, volunteers help their charges stay independent. Sometimes all that’s required of the volunteer is a friendly visit. For example, as part of the program, an elderly couple often would visit my neighbor, who had difficulty getting out of the house. They’d talk for hours about anything from current events to gardening. n Carlile found her volunteer posi- tions through her local RSVP office in Waco, Texas. RSVP offers every imaginable volunteer activity in the U.S. and beyond. Activities available
