focus on issues of contemporary relevance, in politics and international relations, social policy, social work and social inclusion.
An interdisciplinary approach is a significant feature, as well as the theory and development of advanced research methods and acquisition of key skills for innovative research practice.
The Social Policy Research Centre research areas include drugs and alcohol policy; refugees and migration; young people and risk; poverty and social exclusion; disability and health; local economic development and urban regeneration; gender and racial equality studies and comparative social policy.
Research in criminology and sociology focuses on young people; crime and victimisation; police stop and search; hate crime; criminal justice; community safety; policing; prisons and comparative criminology.
The Crime and Conflict Research Centre is involved in innovative and pioneering work not only in crime, policing, community safety, justice and victimisation, but also in the broader field of conflict: social movements, international conflicts, political violence and terrorism. It is also engaged in understanding how these conflicts trigger institutional responses and forms of state control.
Psychology research
All subjects share a distinctive mix of critical theoretical study, policy analysis and applied work. Research concentrates on cognitive, developmental, health, forensic, legal, sports and applied psychology. Research is supported by the Centre for Psychoanalysis.
Psychology facilities include laboratories for psychophysiology, social observation, virtual reality and video analysis, as well as video editing suite, the Babylab and testing cubicles.
Sport and exercise science
Postgraduate study is organised within the London Sport Institute. The Human Performance Laboratory at our Archway campus is a modern, fully equipped human physiology and biomechanics laboratory focusing on sport and exercise science.
Complementary health
Middlesex has been a leader in this field formore than a decade, and was the first university in the UK to validate professional training courses. Research is undertaken in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), notably in western herbalmedicine, Chinese herbalmedicine, acupuncture, and ayurveda. Uniquely, the University has its ownmedicinal herb garden.
We have strong links with external organisations,

including Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, the Asanté Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Ming- Ai Institute, the Chinese National Healthy Living Centre, the National Institute of Medical Herbalists, the College of Ayurveda and the College of Osteopaths.
Research priorities involve methodologies for investigating CAM; quantitative research into CAMuse in the UK; social and historical research into the reasons for the growth of CAM usage and patterns of usage past and present; clinical research to investigate the efficacy and safety of individual therapies. Laboratory based research investigates the efficacy ofmedicinal herbs, their chemical constituents and issues of quality control and standardisation, including the use of in-vitro research methods, cell and tissue culture.
Research skills training
Research students are required to undertake a research methods module in their first year of full-time study (or the equivalent for part-time). You are encouraged to discuss your needs with staff to build and tailor a personal programme. In addition, you are required to attend a programme of postgraduate workshops, seminars and conferences.
