Courses start with what you know now and where you want to get to. They are modular, part-time and focused on real work-based projects of direct benefit to the organisation. The use of portfolios, learning agreements, reflective essays, critical incident diaries, presentations, group work and independent projects develop student skills of analysis and critical enquiry, thus leading to action.
Our Work Based Learning courses are designed to fit the particular needs of you and your organisation, so every one is unique.
A typical course is built around 3 core stages:
Stage 1: Learning Review and Planning
Choose either:
Recognition and Accreditation of Learning (RAL). Development and presentation of a portfolio of your prior learning. RAL is a distinctive feature of Work Based Learning Studies and a dynamic process of identifying, analysing and reflecting on your learning to date. This is assessed for academic credit and may form part of your Work Based Learning Studies course and consequently reduce the overall length of
time and number of modules you require to achieve your target qualification.
And:
Planning Work Based Learning. Activities include designing your personal Work Based Learning course in negotiation with your employer and the University, and producing an individual learning agreement containing your proposed study plan and project ideas.
Or
Review and Development of Work Based Learning. Activities include a critical review of your previous certificated learning. In negotiation with your employer and the University, you create a professional development plan through an individual learning agreement containing your project ideas.
Stage 2: Project Design
Activities include developing a proposal for a work based project. Topics include research methodology in the workplace, action research and being a worker- researcher; designing a research proposal; research objectives; methods and instruments, and ethics of work based research.
Stage 3: Project Implementation
Project work gives you the chance to create new professional knowledge and innovate within your
organisation. Typically, projects might include aspects to do with change at either a departmental or even corporate level, where appropriate within your own autonomy and authority. However, within designated criteria, work based projects can take any form that is of professional and organisational benefit. We also encourage group projects that are undertaken collaboratively.
Course advice
When you start we’ll assign you a course adviser who’ll be with you for the whole of your study. Initially, they will assist you with constructing your customised course. You can stay in contact with your adviser by email, through face-to-face contact at Middlesex or in your workplace. If you are studying as part of a group then peer group support is also an important feature of Work Based Learning Studies.
Assessment
We assess your work through a combination of written submissions, oral presentations and coursework. Written work may include reflective statements, learning journals, project proposals and portfolios. Projects are assessed by written reports (of between 4,000 and 12,000 words) with or without an oral presentation.
