Sustainable Environment
Environmental and geographical research concentrates on flood hazards; natural hazards and disaster management; environmental economics and policy; sustainable urban water management; sources, assessment and control of urban pollution; coastal zone management; climate change; environmental management and sustainability; socio- cultural geography.
The Flood Hazard Research Centre specialises in the interaction between people and the environment, together with the analysis of environmental policies. The centre aims to develop our understanding of the relations between people, water and the environment, so as to reduce the risks from hazards and improve policy making.

The Urban Pollution Research Centre has a diverse research portfolio, including air, water, soil and sediment. We are also involved in consultancy and training for municipal, industrial and natural environments. Our research has focused on the urban water environment, including storm water management systems; water treatment technologies; pollution control; environmental radioactivity; urban air quality and pollution monitoring.

Nursing, midwifery and health
Research in nursing, midwifery and allied health professions is multi- disciplinary and often undertaken with partners in practice or commissioned by UK policy makers. Students benefit from outstanding resources, as well as innovative approaches to study, emphasising practical as well as academic applications of research.
The Centre for Transcultural and Mental Health Research
aims to contribute to the development of health and social care professionals capable of delivering culturally competent services. The centre has five major themes: cultural competence in health and social care; mental health and lifelong learning; substance use/abuse; culture, ethnicity and diversity and ethnicity and disability.
The Centre for Research in Healthcare Policy and Practice aims to foster inquiry into the interaction of health policy and practice in four areas:
• the practice, organisation and delivery of healthcare services
• policy and evidence
• patient/client experience and involvement
• workforce education and development
A current clinical focus is on cancer and palliative care, with particular interest in workforce, education and patient-focused research. Other areas of activity and expertise include examination of the effect of changing healthcare policy on professional identity.
