Your research proposal and application
You will need to provide a research proposal. In conjunction with a prospective supervisor you will identify your area of research and will ensure that this is consistent with the expertise and resources of the

University. You will also need to prove that you have the motivation to pursue a research degree, and that you are able to contribute to the knowledge of your subject. Your proposal should demonstrate that you’ve identified an issue that requires investigation and why you feel it’s important.
In the natural sciences, speculative applications of interest are welcomed from those who have discussed their proposal and potential funding with a relevant academic member of staff.

Research centres
Much of the research carried out at Middlesex is conducted by groups of academics organised into research centres, which enable staff to collaborate and focus their research efforts. New areas of enquiry are opened up in ways that aren’t always possible with research conducted by individual scholars working in isolation. Research centres compete more effectively for external funds and provide an infrastructure to support research activity.
Supervision and support
Academic support is constantly available, whether you work individually or as part of a team. Your supervisors will be suitably qualified and experienced in your research area. At least two supervisors, headed by a director of studies, are appointed to assist you.
Supervisors act as personal tutors, helping you to clarify your initial objectives, structure your research and develop supplementary skills. They also advise on subject reading, relevant taught courses, research seminars and workshops.
Facilities
Researchers and postgraduates have use of dedicated learning spaces and can also acquire specialist software where necessary. In addition to extensive library holdings, the University provides the latest learning technologies, extensive computer labs and specialist equipment.
The law library is maintained to the standards required by the Law Society for the accreditation of professional qualifications and includes journals, law reports, acts and cases for your research.
