Eden 1716 I St. NW
When you walk out onto the roof of Eden (the nightclub formerly known as Eyebar), you forget you’re in the middle of down- town. It’s an oasis among the office blocks, with plants along the walls and a slat-wood floor underfoot. The lounge’s new owners are making use of their outdoor space, with two great weekly parties. At many nightclubs, people hang out with the people they arrive with. The pro- moters behind Move, a day-long Sunday gathering, wanted to change that. Their simple solution: The first 50 people through the doors are handed squirt guns. While top local and international DJs spin and burgers sizzle on grills on the hid- den rear patio, laughing club-goers chase one another around the deck, spraying wa- ter, then refilling at plastic tubs along the walls. Before long, people are shaking hands, high-fiving and teaming up to soak the person who just blasted them. It’s not as hot as you would expect; neighboring buildings block the sun and misting fans provide a breeze. There’s gen- erally no cover, although for some big- name touring DJs there’s a $10 charge. On Thursdays, the weekly Summer Jam
takes a nightclub party vibe and moves it outside. A see-and-be-seen crowd gets down under the stars to a DJ’s house music mix while saxophonist Natty Rico wails away and percussionists play bongos over the beat. Yes, there are tables for bottle service, but most people are content to
dance wherever they can find space, and the bartenders serve icy cocktails. “I love it. It’s such a beautiful night,” says
Kate McFarland, a student at James Madi- son University.

Public Bar
1214 18th St. NW Located atop Public Bar, the three-level
sports bar in the old Five nightclub, the D.C. Sky at Five sticks to the same formula that made its sister event at VisArts in Rockville so popular: draw a young, just- out-of-the-office crowd with free beer for the first 100 people through the door, plus $2 Coors Lights, $4 Absolut or Malibu mixed drinks, and special $5 “cocktail of the month” selections. As ’80s favorites and current pop hits play, guests mingle on wooden benches (under canopies) or around tables. (Hint: The ones near fans go the quickest.) The extended hours (specials run until
11 p.m.) means there’s the choice of drop- ping in right after work or waiting until temperatures drop a bit and heading over to enjoy the night air.
Sky at Five at Public Bar: Wednesdays from 5 to 11 p.m.

Sky at Five in Rockville: Thursdays from 5 to 11 p.m. VisArts, 155 Gibbs St. www.
