HEART AND OPEN YOUR MIND.” — Joe Morgenstern, The Wall Street Journal

“YOU’LL WANT TO KNOW THIS SECRET.
A BEAUTIFUL FILM.” -Joe Morgenstern,
her sister. The interactions of these families, filled with envy, resentment, guilt and impending death, highlight Holofcener’s sharp humor and disarm- ing pathos. “Please Give” can be en- joyed simply for its portraits of human foibles and fumbling grasps at intimacy — but is also deceivingly profound. (R, 90 minutes) Contains sexual content, nudity and profanity. At Landmark’s Bethesda Row.
BB1⁄2 PREDATORS
Adrien Brody plays the de facto leader of a bunch of terrestrial tough guys who have been transported to an alien game preserve, where they must use their survival skills to avoid being killed by the same bloodthirsty critters that first stalked Ah-nuld in the 1987 “Pred- ator.” Black-ops agent Royce is hurtling pell-mell through the sky after being air-dropped into an unfamiliar jungle. When his parachute opens, he lands with a thud next to seven other battle- hardened warriors, including: a Russian soldier (Oleg Taktarov); an enforcer for aMexican drug cartel (Danny Trejo); a member of a Sierra Leone death squad (Mahershalalhashbaz Ali); a Japanese mobster (Louis Ozawa Changchien); a convicted murderer and rapist (Walton Goggins); and a token female G.I. (Alice Braga). There’s also a doctor (Topher Grace). Stylishly directed by Nimród Antal (“Control”), “Predators” is good if gory grindhouse fun. (R, 106 minutes) Con- tains sexual humor, a drug reference, fre- quent obscenity and prodigious amounts of violence, gore and alien goo. Area theaters. — M.O.
BBPRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME
— A.H.
In this adventure based on the popular video game, the focus of Prince Dastan (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a special dagger he has stumbled upon. When a jewel is pressed on its hilt, releasing the few thimblefuls of sand inside, it has the abili- ty to rewind time, but only for one min- ute. Not just any sand will work, either. Hidden underground is a giant glass ves- sel filled with the right kind. Only the dag- ger can break the glass. Once broken, the sand gives its user unlimited ability to travel back in time. The problem is that Dastan’s not the only one who knows about it. Someone else wants it and has set Dastan up for the murder of his adop- tive father, King Sharaman (Ronald Pick- up). Whoever killed Sharaman wants Das- tan out of the way so that he can find the source of the charmed sand himself. With the assistance of the dagger’s official custodian, Princess Tamina (Gemma Ar- terton), Dastan must stop that from hap- pening. (PG-13, 103 minutes) Contains sword and arrow violence and some risque dialogue. At University Mall Theatres.
BBBRESTREPO
This National Geographic-produced docu- mentary plunges viewers into the life of a military platoon whose mission takes on a weirdly dual nature. On one hand, the sol- diers’ aim is simple and specific: to build an outpost in the Korengal Valley, Afghan- istan’s most dangerous territory. But as the film unfolds over the unit’s hitch, the larger strategic goal becomes vague, elu- sive and finally downright abstract, leav- ing viewers in the vortex of a philosophi- cal void. This is made all the more grim in knowing that the United States would pull out of Korengal just two years after the
