4 SUMMER NIGHTS

Celebrating Paul Taylor

As both pupil and master, American choreographer Paul Taylor has a résumé that reads like an encyclopedia entry on 20th-century dance. Taylor got his start performing under George Balanchine, Merce Cunningham and Martha Gra- ham, and his Paul Taylor Dance Com- pany has featured Twyla Tharp, Laura Dean and Dan Wagoner during its 55- year existence. The company’s perform- ance Tuesday at Wolf Trap is an 80th birthday celebration for the choreogra- pher, who has no intention of slowing down: “I make dances because that’s what I’ve spent many years teaching myself to do and it’s become what I’m best at,” he said. “When the dances are good, nothing else brings me as much satisfaction.” See Sunday’s Arts & Style section for Sarah Kaufman’s interview with Taylor.
