He suffered an aortic aneurysm in March and was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer two years ago. Mr. Cochran, who was once married to Grand Ole Opry singer Jeannie Seely, co-wrote the fol- lowing No. 1 hits: Patsy Cline’s “I Fall to Pieces”; George Strait’s “Ocean Front Property”; and “Set ’em Up Joe” by Vern Gosdin. He also wrote the No. 1 hits:
“Don’t You Ever Get Tired of Hurting Me” by both Ray Price and Ronnie Milsap and “He’s Got You” by both Cline and Loretta Lynn. This pleading sentiment was expressed in “Make the World Go Away”: Make the world go away. And get it off my shoulders. Say the things you used to say And make the world go away Mr. Cochran was born in Isola,
Miss., and worked the New Mexi- co oilfields as a young man. He ar- rived in Nashville in 1960, and got a job as a staff songwriter with Pamper Music for $50 a week, hired by country singer Ray Price. Shortly after that, Mr. Cochran helped Willie Nelson get a song- writing job with Pamper.

a Latin Grammy in 2000 for the best Brazilian roots album, and his release “Estacao Leopoldina” was nominated but did not win in 2004 for best Latin instrumental album. In 1962, he played with Sergio
Mendes’s group at the historic Bossa Nova night at Carnegie Hall that helped launched the genre’s mass appeal. Mr. Moura was considered by
many critics to be one of Brazil’s greatest instrumentalists.
Tuli Kupferberg ROCK MUSICIAN
Tuli Kupferberg, 86, a founding member of the Fugs, one of the
first underground rock groups and a staple on the anti-war pro- test scene in the 1960s, died July 12 at a hospital in New York. He had strokes in the past year, bandmate Ed Sanders said. The Fugs were formed by Sand- ers and Mr. Kupferberg, who were neighbors on Manhattan’s Lower East Side in 1965, accord- ing to the band’s Web site. Their name, a substitute for a common expletive, was inspired by Nor- man Mailer, who used it in his classic “The Naked and the Dead.” The band often performed at peace protests. Mr. Kupferberg once referred to the band as “the U.S.O. of the left,” according to the New York Times. The group disbanded in 1969
but reformed several times since. It performed for a time on the Re- prise label, which was owned by Frank Sinatra, who had final ap- proval on album releases. Sanders notes that many of the songs Mr. Kupferberg wrote tend- ed to be on the ribald side. “He wrote satirical, erotic songs,” Sanders said, rattling off titles such as “Morning, Morning,” ’’The Garden is Open” and “Kill for Peace.” Mr. Kupferberg, who also was a
poet, produced cartoons for the Village Voice and had a longtime television program on the Man- hattan public access cable chan- nel, Sanders said. He posted some recent performances, which he called “preverbs,” on YouTube, in- cluding, “Backward Jewish Sol- diers (Hug your Gentile broth- ers),” which was his adaptation of the classic “Onward Christian Soldiers.”
