‘A Capitol Fourth’ Jimmy Smits returns to host the annual Independence Day celebration on the Mall. Joining him in front of the Capitol are Reba McEntire, Gladys Knight, Darius Rucker, pianist Lang Lang, “American Idol’s” David Archuleta and the National Symphony Orchestra. The event, which celebrates 30 years on the air, ends with a fireworks display. Because the Smithsonian Metro stop will be closed Sunday, concertgoers should head to the Capitol South, Federal Center or Union Station stops. Want to check it out without the crowds? See the dress rehearsal of the concert live on Saturday. See Friday’s Weekend section for a roundup of Fourth of July celebrations across the area. —Mark Berman
