Joseph J. Gancie TELECOMMUNICATIONS
DIRECTOR
Joseph J. Gancie, 87, a former vice president and director of government relations for ITT Corp., died June 22 of congestive heart failure at his home in Silver Spring. Mr. Gancie started working in the telecommunications industry in 1946, in New York City. He moved to the Washington area in 1950 to work for ITT on interna- tional telecommunications and military security issues. He was part of a team that worked on the Moscow-Washington hotline. He retired from ITT in 1988 but he continued to work as a consul- tant until 2003. Joseph John Gancie was born
in New York City. He served in the Army during World War II and retired from the Army Reserve in 1983 as a lieutenant colonel. He was a past chairman of the
Federal Communications Com- mission’s national industry ad- visory committee and of the Pa- cific Telecommunications Coun- cil.
He was a member of the Na- tional Press Club, Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association and the World Affairs Council of Washington. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Ruth Peters Gancie of Sil- ver Spring; four children, Patrice Gancie and Vincent Gancie, both of Washington, Rosalie Gancie of Hyattsville and Michael Gancie of Stevensville, Md.; and 10 grand- children.

Horace W. Gross RADIO AND TELEVISION
EXECUTIVE
Horace W. Gross, 93, the re- tired president of Frazier, Gross & Kadlec, a Washington area radio and television station manage- ment consulting company, died of heart disease June 4 at a hospi- tal in Sarasota, Fla. In the late 1940s and early
1950s, Mr. Gross founded an FM radio station and television sta- tion in Allentown, Pa. He moved to Washington in 1956 and be- came vice president of Howard S. Frazier, a broadcast management consulting company. In 1970, Mr. Gross took over the company and expanded its opera- tion to include more than 1,200 radio, television and cable clients across the country. He retired in 1982 but continued to work as a private industry consultant for many years.
At the time of his death, he owned radio stations in West Chester, Pa., and Chestertown, Md. Howard White Gross, a native of Philadelphia, was a 1941 busi- ness graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. He worked as a ci- vilian for the Army Signal Corps before serving in the Navy during World War II. His memberships included the Broadcast Pioneers and St. John’s Episcopal Church in McLean. He was a longtime Washington area resident before retiring to Sarasota in the early 2000s. Survivors include his wife,
Nancy Appel Gross of Sarasota; two children, Melissa Carel of Chamblee, Ga., and Peter Gross of Bronxville, N.Y.; and two grand- children.

Steve M. Hajek, 92, a personnel
management specialist with the Army Department from 1961 to 1981, died June 16 at Sunrise of Hunter Mill, a senior living facil- ity in Oakton, of cardiac arrest. Prior to working for the Army
Department as a civilian, Mr. Ha- jek was an accountant for Gener- al Electric in Erie, Pa., from 1950 to 1961. He was a Woodbridge res- ident from 1961 to 2004. Steve Milan Hajek, a native of
Hoboken, N.J., received a bach- elor’s degree in business adminis- tration in 1948 from what is now Rider University in Lawrence- ville, N.J. He served in the Army during World War II and retired from the Army Reserve as a lieu- tenant colonel in 1977. His military decorations in- cluded the Army Commendation Medal. In an effort to increase public
transportation access in Prince William County, he was an al- ternate commissioner for the Po- tomac and Rappahannock Trans- portation Commission during the 1990s and a member of the Vir- ginia Railway Express Operations Board from 1989 until the early 2000s. He also volunteered as a crime analyst for the Prince William po-

Ruth B. Hoadley CLINICAL SOCIAL WORKER
Ruth Burchard Hoadley, 94, a clinical social worker at George Washington University Hospital from 1967 until her retirement in 1980, died June 23 in her home in Columbia. She had Alzheimer’s disease.
She was born Ruth Eloise Stone in Des Moines and moved to the Washington region a few years later. She received a bach- elor’s degree in economics from Goucher College in Baltimore in 1937 and received a master’s de- gree in social work from Catholic University in 1967. She had lived in Kensington and Gaithersburg before moving to Columbia.
She was a member of the
League of Women Voters, the Ce- dar Lane Unitarian Universalist Church in Bethesda, the Amer- ican Association of University Women and the Association of World Federalists. Her marriage to Marion B. Richmond ended in divorce. Her husband of 13 years, Jack Bur- chard, died in 1998, and her hus- band of three years, Frank Hoa- dley, died in 2002. Survivors include three chil- dren from her first marriage, Ann R. Gottfeld of Columbia, Paul B. Richmond of Frostburg, Md., and Thomas S. Richmond of Silver Spring; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. — Lauren Wiseman
Daniel W. Inabinett RAILROAD OFFICIAL
Daniel W. Inabinett, 87, a re- tired director of training for the Federal Railroad Administration, died June 17 at Holy Cross Hospi- tal in Silver Spring. He had a stroke. Mr. Inabinett joined the rail- road agency in 1971 and was re- sponsible for training field in- spectors. He helped develop the railroad program at the Depart- ment of Transportation’s Trans- portation Institute in Oklahoma City. He retired in 1986. Daniel William Inabinett was born in Charleston, S.C., and moved to Washington as a child. He was a graduate of Gonzaga College High School and served in the Army Signal Corps during World War II. In 1950, he received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Catholic Uni- versity. He was an engineer and pro-
gram manager for Engineering and Research Corp. from 1950 to 1971. Mr. Inabinett, a Silver Spring resident, was active in Gonzaga alumni affairs and was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Community in Silver Spring. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Mary Smith Inabinett of Silver Spring; three daughters, Denise Boor of Radford, Va., Su- san Clark of Ijamsville and Mary Elizabeth “Beth” Inabinett of Chevy Chase; eight grandchil- dren; and two great-granddaugh- ters.

Joan Gaylor Jarboe, 74, who
held several professional and ad- ministrative jobs with the Labor Department, died June 7 at Mont- gomery General Hospital in Ol- ney. She had complications from a bacterial infection. Mrs. Jarboe joined the Labor
Department in the mid-1960s and worked at various times as a writer-editor, program analyst and grant and contract adminis- trator. She retired in 1992. Joan Lee Gaylor was born in
Washington, and she graduated from Northwestern High School in Hyattsville in 1954. She re- ceived a bachelor’s degree in jour- nalism from the University of Maryland in 1958. She had in- ternships with the Baltimore Sun and Washington Times-Herald. Before joining the Labor De-
partment, Mrs. Jarboe worked for the National Planning Associa- tion, a private research group, and several federal agencies. She lived in the District for
many years before moving to Rockville in the late 1980s. She was a member of Phi Chi Theta, a professional business and eco- nomics fraternity. Survivors include her husband
of 21 years, George E. Jarboe of Rockville; a stepdaughter, Kath- leen J. Lewis Rose CANTOR
Lewis “Lew” Rose, 93, a cantor
at Beth Torah Congregation in Hyattsville from 1981 to 1997, died June 10 at his home in Col- lege Park. He had Parkinson’s dis- ease. Mr. Rose started his career as a professional singer in opera and musical theater. He sang with the old Columbia Opera Company in Washington during the 1930s, performed on Broadway during the 1940s, including in the musi- cal “My Dear Public,” and sang on Max Reznick’s show, a Washing- ton area radio program, during the 1950s. During World War II, he toured
stateside Army camps and vet- erans’ hospitals with the United Service Organizations. Before he was a cantor, Mr. Rose was a men’s clothing man- ager for the Woodward & Lothrop department store and Raleigh Haberdasher, both in Washing- ton.
A native of Roanoke, Va., he moved to the Washington region during the 1920s and was a 1935 graduate of McKinley Tech High School. He had been a member of Beth Torah Congregation since 1956. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Millicent “Millie” Lewis Rose of College Park; a daughter, Rhonda Rose of Annapolis; a sis- ter, Esther Elstein of Rockville; and a grandson.

Died Sunday, June 27 at Conway Medical Center following an illness. Mr. McCarthy was born July 21, 1944 in San Francisco, CA, a son of the late Joseph and Edna McCarthy. Age 84, of Massanutten Village, VA, passed away June 27, 2010 in Harrisonburg, VA. She was born July 5, 1925 and was the daughter of the late Chief and Lucy Wade Caddotte. She was a teacher’s aid at Bradbury Heights Elementary School in Maryland. On June 28, 1953 she married Wylie M. Moneymaker who passed away June 25, 1997. Surviving are two daughters; Barbara A. Hicks of Charlottesville, VA, Cheryl M. Young of Massanutten Village, a son; John “Tommy”Moneymaker of Lynchburg, VA, 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three children, Wayne D. Smith, Wylie E. Moneymaker and Lyle B. Moneymaker. Rev. Carlton Duck will conduct a memorial service July 3, 2010 at 2 p.m. at the Gethse- mane Baptist Church, 411 Blue Ridge Street. Lynchburg, VA.
