This page contains a Flash digital edition of a book.
My first book was Ship’s Log by Henry Beard and Roy McKie. It measures 5” by 8” and worked fine for day sailing. When I got a bigger boat, I bought a bigger book, the Boat Log and Record book by Marlin Bree.

When the wind goes light, just turn on

UK-Halsey's “Downwind Diesel” and go green

(or any color you want).

A UK-Halsey Flasher can eliminate boring and painfully slow offwind cruising without your resorting to “iron wind” and a cockpit filled with exhaust. The Flasher is an asymmetric pole-less cruising spinnaker that’s simple to fly, painless to gybe, and easy to set and douse thanks to the dousing sock. It’s not an expensive addition! The Flasher is just one of many cruising products you’ll want to discuss with a UK-Halsey loft.

Float plan: I fill this out and give it to someone before a weekend or extended trip. It includes a description of the boat, itinerary, time of departure and arrival. If we are not back on time, someone will know where to start looking.

There are also more sentimental

reasons for keeping a log. My wife copies the logbook and puts pictures with them in a scrapbook with notes from the kids. I cannot tell you how much I enjoy reliving those times through pictures. It seems like I could just look at the loose pictures and remember the trip or even the year of the trip. I am 48 now, and the years are speeding up and becoming a blur. Without the log, it would be impossible to keep the pictures and trips in order. After 21 years of sailing together,

my wife has presented me with three photo albums of my logbook, accompanied by pictures and notes. I will get the books out when no one else is around and I am back on Jones Island with Karin and those little deer that would walk right up to us. Then there was our first week long

trip to Sucia Island. My Dad and I had to clear a path through the mysterious migration of the black slugs. The trip to Penrose was idyllic. The family played football barefoot in the grass and I felt 20 again. These books hold a boat load of memories. The last album was presented to me on Father’s Day; what a wonderful gift. Time is a little short to complete a photo album this year, but it all begins with the ship’s log. Now, that would be a great gift for anyone who loves boating.
