dates back to a Florentine policy issued in 1501.
All admirals technically come from
the deserts of Arabia. The word can be traced back to the title of Abu-Bekr, who was called Amir-al-muninin, Commander of the Faithful, before he succeeded Mohammed as Caliph in 632 A.D. Admiral means “commander of”.
The Beaufort scale, used to measure
wind velocity, was devised in 1806 by Sir Francis Beaufort, noted surveyor and hydrologist who later became a rear admiral and served as hydrographer to the British Navy from 1829 to 1855.
Samuel Colt ran away to sea from his
home in Hartford, Connecticut, at age 16 and spent his nights on a ship's deck whittling a wooden model of the Colt revolver that was to make him wealthy and famous.
To be broken-up was the final destiny of a ship. A broadside was originally a naval
maneuver of firing off at once all the guns on one side of a ship.
Bulk originally meant cargo in a ship.
The bulkhead is a perpendicular division in a ship's hold, separating cargo stowed in bulk.
That Christopher Columbus died in
poverty is an often-repeated legend that has no foundation in fact. His will and other evidence reveal that he possessed considerable wealth at the time of his death in 1506. He was disappointed that he was neglected by the Court, but he wasn't destitute.

were made of hemp, while those of American vessels were made of cotton.
A captain’s walk is a gallery around a
cupola on mansions of the type originally built by retired shipmasters.
To cast about was to try different
courses when in doubt as to a ship's position.
A Maine legislator once introduced
a bill into the state legislature making it illegal to add tomatoes to chowder within the state of Maine.
