Fast & effective solutions to school building needs

avid Dury is Business Development Manager for Sport & Leisure at Spaciotempo – the UK’s leading provider of temporary and semi permanent buildings to a vast range of market sectors. Here he assesses the benefits which educational establishments can achieve through the specification of these buildings as short, medium or long term solutions for their sports or educational building provision. The need to maximise covered areas for increased sports and play provision in schools is increasingly being highlighted by designers of educational facilities - with emphasis being placed on the outdoor learning agenda.
Representatives of the Association for Physical Education (afPE) and the Partnerships for Schools programme, have highlighted the need for ‘breaking the mould’ of the traditional 4-court badminton sports hall in schools. There is clearly strong encouragement for developing imaginative designs for outdoor sports structures - to create a greater covered external space.
ADAPT TO CHANGING REQUIREMENTS Flexible, modular and lasting up to 30 years, temporary or semi permanent structures are an ideal choice when constructing new schools, allowing future adaptability to meet ever changing educational needs. If covering existing outdoor surfaces or creating a new indoor provision, a temporary or semi- permanent sports hall, sports building or sports cover can be installed for far less cost than a traditional brick built structure. This can create an out-of-season revenue stream and furthermore, temporary structures can prove a cost effective solution to meet short term needs when buildings are required due to unexpected demand or refurbishment of permanent facilities.

Schools and universities are increasingly looking to provide high quality covered playing areas to control the negative impact of the ever changing climate. They can increase their active season, accommodate more participants, and generate more profitable use of outdoor facilities.
TAILOR MADE FACILITIES
The leading providers offer facilities from fully enclosed sports building through to simply a highly durable frame and roofing membrane to create a simple but effective canopy. For enclosed sports buildings, an array of specialist options include lighting, flooring, walling and temperature enhancement systems enable the configuration of anything from a basic structure to high specification, sophisticated facilities.
This enables the creation of suitable playing areas for a wide range of typical school sports applications, including: Tennis, Football, Swimming, Athletics, Archery, Gymnastics, Basketball, Badminton, Boxing, Cricket, Indoor Hockey, Martial Arts, Netball, Equine facilities and many, many more. Across all activities, the use of a translucent fabric roofing material allows a large amount of natural light, giving a more natural playing environment during daylight hours, plus reducing running costs and energy consumption.
At Spaciotempo, we offer cutting edge products and services to enable all of these solutions. Indeed, we have worked on a number of Building Schools for the Future (BSF) schemes with the temporary provision of sports halls, exam halls, communal spaces and even theatres. We can now deliver semi- permanent and permanent multi-purpose buildings as an integral part of the infrastructure of sports facilities for any school.
MULTI-PURPOSE SOLUTION The 700 m² building, predominantly installed for use a sports hall, has doubled up to provide sufficient space for assemblies and a place of worship for all students. The school desperately needed a temporary facility before the Building Schools for the Future programme commenced. It has enabled students to benefit from a larger multi-use games area ensuring that indoor PE and extra-curricular sports activities can accommodate more participants. The building has been specified to a high standard, including specialist flooring and sports light fittings to ensure a high quality playing environment. The inflated thermo roof not only assists with temperature control and natural light but also aids teaching through its improved acoustic qualities, allowing teachers to be heard more effectively, in what is a very busy environment.
